Let’s go Paddling!! Malaekahana to Turtle Bay 2011

Aloha Paddlers,

We had a good paddle this last weekend with light following winds and small surf for our trip from Kahana Bay to Malaekahana, and we’ve revised our schedule to make sure we’re off the North Shore before Mid Sept. and potential big surf.  So……we’ll be paddling again this coming weekend.  This paddle, on Sunday, August 07 will complete the Windward(east) side of the island, and take us around Kahuku Point(the and into Turtle Bay on the North shore.

This is another great paddle which will start at Malaekahana beach Park.    After the put-in, we’ll proceed immediately outside the reef and turn north to paddle the 7.5 miles to Turtle Bay.  Along the way, we’ll be passing the really secluded stretches of shoreline with nice beaches, including one nude beach(if you want to stop there for a break, there may be entertainment provided), and then into the 2 mile rocky, desolate section going around Kakuku point.  If the surf permits, we’ll paddle into the cove at Turtle Bay Resort and invade the cove for a swim with the tourist before we paddle the final ½ mile around the point into Turtle Bay to land on it’s seclude white sand beach.

This is a 7.5 mile  paddle that can be very pleasant in good conditions but a real challenge if the wind is over 20 MPH or if a  large  North or East  swell is running, which would be unusual this time of year.  So, if you have questions about whether you should go on this one if the conditions are challenging,  I’d suggest that everyone call the weather (973-4380 ext. 2) and surf (ext. 3) reports before you leave home on Sunday to confirm that conditions are within your comfort and safety zone.

So, next Sunday, August 07, we’ll meet at Malaekahana Beach Park at 8:00 AM.  Shuttle cars will leave at 8:20 to 4park at Turtle Bay, with the paddlers leaving the beach at 9:00 AM.  We can figure on about a 3 hour paddle so with our ½ way stop, we’ll most likely finish up around 12:30 PM.

Outing details:

When:     Sunday, August 07, 8:00 AM
Where:    Malaekahana Bay to Turtle Bay
Start:    Malaekahana Beach Park
Finish:   Turtle Bay
Distance: 7.5 Miles
Finish:   About 12:30 PM

Regarding a place to park the shuttle cars at the take out, we’ll have two choices.  Our normal parking spot is at the horse barns behind the golf course pro shop, but we might want to check out the parking close to the Turtle Bay cove, which would make it a bit of a shorter paddle with showers at the end, the only down-side is that if the swell is too large, we may not be able to get in the mouth of the cove.  We can talk this over and make a decision on Sunday morning.  So, look forward to a great day on the water on the 07th!

Also, I’ve attached the revised schedule for the rest of the year to this note, so be sure to print it and replace the one hanging on your wall with this one!!  Click HERE to download the PDF copy of the revised schedule.
