Kailua's RecreationLife in Kailua has always revolved around the beaches and the water. Kailua was dominated by Hobbie Cats in the 1970's where dozens of bright sails could be seen on any given day. In the late 70's and early 80's windsurfing hit Kailua like a storm. Local resident Robbie Naish was a young kid who picked up the sport and then dominated the Pro circuit for decades to come. Kite surfing began in the late 90's and once again Kailua was a big part of the mix. Kitesurfers to this day can be seen jumping and surfing and keeping beach goers entertained. Kayaking hit the scene in the 90's as well and now thousands of people a year paddle to the offshore islands and around the bay. Kailua is also host to at least three outrigger canoe clubs and host several large regattas each year.
